00:00:48 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah. Good. Thank you. Thank you so much for.

00:00:51 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Having me on very welcome, very welcome. Just I guess probably the the the easiest thing to start off with is you've you've not been on the tails venture stage yet. So if you could give a.

00:01:01 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

A brief introduction summary to people that haven't heard of you before.

00:01:07 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, sure. So my name is Sally Orange. And yes, that really is my name. It's not been changed or anything. That was the name that I was born with. A fruit, fruity little little surname. And basically I served in the in the military, in the army for for 22 years in the the Royal Army Medical Corps as a physiotherapy.

00:01:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Officer, but just last November, I was actually medically discharged due to being diagnosed with severe depression and and chronic anxiety and and really to help with my depression, I sort of took up physical challenges.

00:01:44 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Wow. And I I know having been a being a veteran myself that.

00:01:51 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Physical challenges are are something we're we're quite well geared towards. So I'm gonna. I'm gonna pick out some of your key ones, if that's OK. And then we're definitely gonna dive into some of some of the other ones you've completed the the race across America, the Marthand disables an English.

    00:01:59

    Yep.

00:02:11 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Channel relay as well as a 250 ski across the Arctic Circle.

00:02:18 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Wow, I've done like like just trying to fathom all of this. It's it's incredible.

00:02:26 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Which I guess you've you've done all environments. Which ones? Your favourite and worst? I guess there's a.

00:02:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Well, as you say, just completely, you know, completely different environments, you know, marathon symbols, you know, 50° temperature. But then I've also ran across a frozen lake in Mongolia and that was -50. So I have literally done, you know, extremes at both angles.

00:02:52 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Which is my favourite. I I think they they both bring different things so.

00:02:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, I think they're they're very different to to compare and I enjoyed them both. And I say that I say that looking back, I don't know if at.

00:03:05 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    The time I did.

00:03:07 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

They those sand dunes in the mouth and their saddles are sorry to interrupt. There's there's there's sand genes. I definitely had a essentially humour failure when I was going on one of those on one of the the third days. I think it was.

00:03:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah. Yeah, no, I I've got a few. I've got a few tales from from that. From that adventure. Yeah. It was pretty epic.

00:03:31 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    And.

00:03:33 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

The I I realise I've admitted one another huge thing as well. Like you've you've set world records as well. I apologies for missing those off.

00:03:43 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Ohh no no no problem.

00:03:45 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Tell tell us a bit more about your world records with you.

00:03:49 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah. So I I've ran over 50 marathons now, and with that I've managed to get 3 Guinness World Records and and and one world first, I suppose.

00:04:02 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

In that my very first marathon to run, I got the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon dressed as a superhero. My my second marathon was actually then in Afghanistan. No, sorry, no, my, my next one was again the the London Marathon.

00:04:21 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And I got the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon dressed as a piece of fruit.

00:04:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Where where I ran as a as an orange cause all all of my my challenges. I use them to raise money and I'd I'd already raised quite a lot for outward bound trust with the first one superhero and then with the you know, I I needed to think of how can I raise more? So that's where my surname surname came into play and thought. Yeah runners.

00:04:46 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Run as an orange. Then I went to Afghanistan with the with the army, and while I was there, I thought I'll run another one as a banana.

00:04:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And then I carried on just doing marathons and before I knew it, I, you know, I I love travel and I loved travelling to different places and meeting different people. And before I knew it, I think I've got four or five continents. So I then went for, you know, completing a marathon on every continent which, you know, a few people have have done that.

00:05:15 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

But I chose to do it a bit different in that I carried on wearing the fruit costume, so I am now the only person on the planet that has run a marathon on every continent in fancy dress, but more specifically dressed as fruit.

00:05:30 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Incredible. I was like.

00:05:33 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

But then, but then last year, everybody always says to me you're completely nuts. And you know, I'm a big, big advocate of mental, you know, mental health. And so I thought, you know what I'm. I'm gonna embrace this. So I decided to dress as a as a peanut.

00:05:49 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And ran and got the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon dress as a nut and had a sign on me that said nuts about mental health. Together we can crack it and managed to get to get that message into the the Guinness World Record, the Guinness Book of World Records. So.

00:06:06 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    So yeah, a bit different.

00:06:09 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

But it's it's brilliant. Like you, my God, you. You've done some incredibly hard, hard challenges like more than like, I think 98% of people that I know, like 98 people that definitely talk until the.

00:06:25 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Each stage it's incredible having you know this. The the kind of diversity of environments, you know, I know some people.

00:06:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Oh.

00:06:35 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

I find it easier to be in like cold environments or in hot environments or you know jungles or or or deserts or stuff like that. And like for somebody to, I think to to hear from somebody who's done, like all of the environments and thrived in all of them. It's it's incredible. It's like a real it's a real like strength in itself.

00:06:44 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:06:56 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Ohh, thank you. Yeah, thank you. I suppose when I look back I you know, I suppose. Yeah. Deserts, Afghanistan and then you know there's Sahara for for that and then cold the Antarctica. Mongolia. Norway with the Arctic Circle. And I was due to be at the North Pole a few months ago but have to wait.

00:07:14 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Till next year.

00:07:14 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

For that one cause of the situation.

00:07:17 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

My God is is literally like reading off my bucket list right now. And just like the the North Pole is definitely up there for, well, the polls, I guess there.

00:07:26 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Definitely on my To Do List as well as well, well mountains. And that's one thing. I've apologies. I've also missed off as well is you've also done some some pretty punchy mountains as well.

00:07:28 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:07:37 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Haven't you?

00:07:38 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, yeah, I've done. Done a couple I-1, which you know, which is a. A few people have, you know, have done is is Kilimanjaro, which I did dressed as a a bunch of grapes. So I spent the the five days for that dress as a bunch of grapes. But then, yeah, Island Peak in the pool. Chacha camanga in in Bolivia. And I was very fortunate. They were through the military.

00:08:00 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So we were actually doing medical research, so we were sort of taking saliva samples.

00:08:05 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Blood blood samples as we went up the mountain just to have a look at the effect of altitude. So yeah, I was very fortunate with with getting to you know, those places with with some of them so.

00:08:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, yeah.

00:08:18 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And I'm I know you were we we spoke a couple of weeks ago. You were you were joining one of the the other tales adventure speaks.

00:08:29 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Justin Davis, you, you. I don't. I don't want to. Yeah, like, bring up some frustration. But you you were due to be on Elbrus with him.

00:08:30 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

That's right. Yeah. What was was due to be.

00:08:42 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, was, was. Was hoping to. Yeah. Yeah. I've known just known Justin for, you know, for quite a few years now. And yeah, an incredible, incredible inspiration. And you know what? What he's achieved and what you know, what continues to achieve. And yeah, it's just nice to, you know, nice to be able to support support.

00:08:43 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    In the coming weeks.

00:09:02 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    In in different ways so.

00:09:04 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, we'll have to look for another another date in the diary, maybe next year, hopefully.

00:09:09 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Definitely. Yeah, we, we, him and I were chatting a couple of months ago near the start of of lockdown about his, his inspiration to do the seven summit or be, you know be be the first double amputee to do the seven summits and and just his his you know.

00:09:25 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:09:28 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

His and and your motivation is is utterly inspiring, you know, in spades. It's.

00:09:36 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Him as a double amputee, obviously wanting to develop some better prosthetics to help with the with obviously the difficult, unstable terrain and obviously yourself, who's just got all this, this multi environment specialist, you know it's, you know, Oh my God, I've got. I can't wait to put both of you guys on the on the same stage. I think it's going to be a it's going to be a sellout.

00:09:57 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Event.

00:09:58 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I think I think sometimes we, you know, I've as I say, I've known Justin for quite some time.

00:10:02 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And, you know, known known the highs and the lows. And I think you know, it's often got as as you very much know you know at the moment that you know seeing the challenges quite often when people see the successes, they don't always see what goes on being you know underneath the surface the time, the commitment, the dedication, the the.

00:10:19 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:10:22 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know the upset, the the frustrations which all make you part of the person you are. It's all part of the journey. But I really do think that surrounding yourself with positive people breeds positivity, and that's what I've tried to do over the the last few years, which is I think, why, why Justin sort of remained in, you know, a circle of.

00:10:41 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Friends.

00:10:42 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:10:43 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Like absolutely spot on. You know I I totally having done like some very minor things myself from doing ocean rose and and I've.

00:10:53 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Like, I don't think they're minor, Chris. They're not really minor, are they?

00:10:56 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Definitely I compared.

00:10:57 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

To compared to like yours and yours and justins. But I yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It's like sometimes on the face of it, it's like.

00:11:04 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You'd say ohh you this you know completed this or done this and actually you you remember those? Those really difficult days where?

00:11:12 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

It's, you know, it's snowing or there's sand dunes the size of a house or there's, you know, there's all these hurdles. Waves. Yeah. There's like waves and sand dunes and the like, like winds, you know, and snow. And it's like.

00:11:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    The waves, yeah.

00:11:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Wind altitude, all, all different things.

00:11:26 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, the, the, the days when you don't even get an attempt to go to the summit that you're just like, oh, this is so.

00:11:33 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Rubbish.

00:11:34 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah. And I think the year the years leading up to these challenges as well, you know, I certainly know for the for the race across America that was you know it was 19 of us that were in the team and we were all either wounded, injured or sick and that that's the support team as well as the cyclists. And you know it was getting the funding. It was over 100,000.

00:11:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Sounds to to compete in that.

00:11:56 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So you know, there was a lot of lot of work that goes on behind the scenes rather than just crossing that that finish line and it it gets to the point where the actual challenge is is the easy bit because you're you know you're yeah, it's the time where you haven't got to think about all the planning for the for the the event itself you can just you know enjoy and relax into it and.

    00:12:07

    Yes, yes.

00:12:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, just just.

00:12:18 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Take take that part, take part in that.

00:12:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So yeah, it it's. Yeah. It's not always all easy.

00:12:25 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, there's and I've got friends in sort of like the ocean Rome community as well who, you know, over a number of years have to raise that, you know, that large amount of money just to get to the start line. And then they're like, thank God I can relax, and I don't have to be doing all this outreach, all this marketing, all this.

00:12:37 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

    00:12:43

    Yeah.

00:12:45 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know all these other things which come with the challenge itself, that it's just, you know, by the time you get there, you're like, oh, thank God, that's that's all done.

00:12:52 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Now I can.

00:12:52 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Just concentrate on actually doing this doing.

00:12:53 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:12:56 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, great, isn't it?

00:13:00 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    It does, yeah, yeah.

00:13:03 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

I guess it kind of draws me on to the the second question, if you don't mind me asking what what kind of got you into these, these adventures, you know, as as in in the marathons and the mountaineering in the Sahara in the Arctic, what what kind of led you to all these things?

00:13:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, it's, it's funny. I I I distinctly remember 1981. I was seven years old and I was watching the very, very first London Marathon. And I remember thinking of myself one day. I would love to do that. It it actually took another 20-6 years before I actually looked at the courage to take up the challenge.

00:13:41 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So it wasn't until I was 34 when I ran, ran my first marathon, and that was the one as a superhero. And that's where I kind of for the first time, really felt like a a superhero. And that's I think that's really when it all first. It wasn't until 2007 being in the military was.

00:13:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Was was helpful, not not particularly for the for the running in the marathons, but more for the. As I say through the the mountaineering I I did those through through adventurous training with that and I think that then just gave you know a bit of a you know fire in my belly and.

00:14:13 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    I you know, I thought.

00:14:15 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I thought I'd seen a programme on the the marathon dissolves.

00:14:18 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And and and to be honest, the first time I applied, I actually didn't go the first time and I had. I had some some problems, and whether that spurred spurred me on to think right. I definitely will go the the next time.

00:14:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And yeah, you know then through I think through getting involved with the unfortunately when I became unwell some opportunities arose after that through the through the military for the, for the wounded, injured and sick community. Yeah. So things like the the channel relay, I mean that was actually part of.

00:14:52 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    A bigger.

00:14:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

A bigger event which is actually called the arch to arc, so it it involves running from Marble Arch to Dover which is 87 miles then then swimming the channel and then cycling from Calais to the to the Octa Triomphe and we became the 1st all female wounded engine sick team to do that so.

    00:15:02

    Yes.

00:15:13 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, that was an opportunity that almost came about because I'd been unwell and then the race across America was me wanting to to give back to to others. You know, I'd seen I'd seen how that had.

00:15:26 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

To me, you know, with small small goals to work towards and yeah, so that's why I put together the team for the for the race across America.

00:15:35 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

That's brilliant. The the arts to Arctic is. That's another one on my To Do List. I was just like, I was like, as soon as you start saying I was like, I know this. I know this is brilliant.

    00:15:44

    Yeah.

00:15:46 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Ohh yeah, so well, I just I tend to just call it the channel relay swim because I know a lot of people haven't heard.

00:15:47 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    I'm even more jealous now.

00:15:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, heard of the the arch to arc. I've done. I've done a few triathlons.

00:16:00 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

But well, I suppose I've done 7 Iron Manns now, but again, I've done two of them dressed as pieces of fruit, so I always keep the.

00:16:04 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:16:10 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Sense of humour with it.

00:16:12 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Oh my God I've I've. I've only done 2 myself and and they are. They are like long long days and.

00:16:19 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, yeah, it's a long day in the.

00:16:21 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Office for sure.

00:16:23 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

But but then it's like it could be really hot as well. It's like I found it. I found then like the cycle and the the run, obviously they're both held in.

00:16:34 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

What July or August or September?

00:16:35 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, or yeah, it depends where. Yeah, I've done. Yeah. Bolton. It's it's. It's not all. No, I have actually had sunburn wear, you know? Try, try suit shaped sunburn even from Bolton. But then I have been looking if I've done Hamburg and Copenhagen and Barcelona.

00:16:47 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:16:56 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So you know, some of them are sea swim, so Barcelona was a sweep which was the choppier sea of ever ever seen. I did actually vomit in that one.

00:17:01 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    ohh

00:17:06 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Ohh man I I can only like I can only imagine it's because people people often say they're like Oh yes Chris like try try to see a sea Iron Man. And I'm just like ohh. But I don't like something in the sea. It's it's slightly easier because obviously you're more buoyant but like just just thinking of like the amount of times when I take a gulp of.

00:17:15 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:17:22 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, yeah.

00:17:27 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, a sea water and just like I'll, I'll be vomiting within the first, like, you know, 100 metres of that.

00:17:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Exactly.

00:17:33 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Exactly, and it's definitely beneficial to be able to breathe on both sides with with the sea swing, whereas it's not quite, it's not quite as necessarily if you do a lake swim or but yeah, you know, just add add to the add to the.

00:17:42 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:17:45 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Challenge and that's.

00:17:47 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

It's it's, it's my God. I'm. I'm utterly bowled over by just how.

00:17:52 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Or like like multi talented you are like you know.

00:17:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Ohh I I'm not sure I'd call myself talented. It's not a.

00:17:58 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

No, but like like, you know, Sahara and Arctic and Iron Man's it's, you know, it's like you'll you'll. I can't wait for you to be able to talk about the stage because you'll be, you know, you'll have a legion of of fans. I reckon after this, you know, after.

00:18:16 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, they hear about your, you know, your first hand stories. It's. Yeah. It's an inspiration to, you know, to to many young women.

00:18:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Ohh that's very very kind.

00:18:24 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And and and and you're kind of like your journey into physiotherapy as well. You've obviously presumably picked up a, you know, some good practise for for doing these events.

00:18:25 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Almost three times.

00:18:36 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, I mean that came came about probably probably not in the best way in that I I broke my leg when I was when I was 16.

00:18:44 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And you know, had to have metalwork in it and.

00:18:46 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

But it you know, it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do, career wise. It wasn't an easy journey. Again, I I you know, I didn't do very well on my A levels and had to go and do a degree before I did my physio degree but it you know and I I suppose my determination came out with that because it sort it took six years from first applying to finally.

00:19:06 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, actually been being accepted and then another three years of training, so a nine year journey. But it was I I knew that I wanted to wanted to do it and yeah it's given you know it's given me insight into lots of you know lots of different things I I've done quite a lot of support for events and and I started.

00:19:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Off by, you know, I was the physio for Lawrence Dalio when he cycled from Rome to Edinburgh.

00:19:30 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Ohh wow.

00:19:30 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Awesome. Yeah, yeah.

00:19:33 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know him and Freddie Flintoff, and you know quite a lot of, you know, James Cracknell came and and joined, so there was lots of, you know, lots of, you know, really inspiring athletes on on that. And then, you know, I was fortunate to volunteer at the Commonwealth Games and at the Paralympics, so.

00:19:51 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, I was always sort of on the on the other side of.

00:19:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Of challenges and and sports. And I've actually been support crew for somebody who did the arch to work and she said to me yeah ohh you'll be doing this. And I was like there's no way you would ever get me in the sea. Two years later I was then then doing it myself so yeah. But I also think that way I have a real appreciation of.

00:20:14 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

How hard the support team works.

00:20:16 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Because, you know, I did another one actually with Mark Beaumont who cycled. He cycled around the world in. Yeah, just under 80 days. But he was he was on a a a trip that I was doing from Bangkok to Singapore and he came and joined us for for a week and it was hard work being on the road for for all that.

00:20:37 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Time. So. But yeah, yeah, I think it gives you an appreciation of of what your supporters, you know, go go through and the support crew go through. So, so seeing both sides of it, really.

00:20:44 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, my God.

00:20:48 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Like it's A and is it? Is it?

00:20:52 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Kind of help you make your mind up as to do you prefer being the support crew for these these big events, or do you know we I guess we want to continue doing these like challenges. I guess what you know.

00:21:08 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah. No, I I do now. You know, I think I probably prefer prefer doing them, but I I think it gave me a you know really good basis of of just seeing how other people you know how how other people did it. So I actually was support crew for something called Team True Spirits which.

00:21:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Was for veterans were sort of amputees doing the Ironman First off, so it got me to go and see the ever.

00:21:30 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And you know, see what it was like, what the transitions were like and and things like that. And. And and then say, you know, if if people there was just so many different types of people doing it, all different shapes and sizes, different speeds, different goals. So, you know, it really just, I mean the motto of Iron Man.

00:21:50 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Is anything is possible and yeah, you know it it kind of did give me.

00:21:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    That mindset, really.

00:21:56 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

It's I I know exactly what you mean. I can I remember on my my first Iron Man. I've I've only done two. I remember. I remember I wasn't. I was never a good run. The an average cyclist and a rubbish swimmer. And and and I I I came like maybe the last 10 people in the swim, you know.

00:22:10 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, yeah.

00:22:16 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And it was literally like seconds before the cut off. And then I had to like pedal like hell to, you know, obviously regain my place and and and, you know, started overtaking a few people.

00:22:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:22:26 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And then obviously the marathon, it's it was that was just felt like a fight. And then I I remember being right behind this, this huge guy who was doing a bodybuilder or something. He was absolutely enormous. And I was like, right, I'll I'll aim to. I'll see if I can overtake him. And it was we were both, you know, going from run to walk.

    00:22:39

    Yeah.

00:22:47 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And he stayed like so, like within arms. Distance of the all the way to the very end. And it's like in hindsight now I'm like, that's that's that's really good because that guy was, you know, he must have been he's like a rugby player or something. He wasn't like enormous, you know, just so much carrying so much muscle around with him. I was like, that's really. Really.

00:23:00 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, yeah.

00:23:07 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, can't be all that efficient and.

00:23:09 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, you have a huge respect for people. Yeah. You have a huge, huge, huge respect. And and my first very, very first triathlon was probably a bit silly, but I did 1/2 Ironman as my first one and I really wasn't very good on the bike. So I did it with one foot clipped in and one foot not clipped in cause I didn't have, you know, I really was so scared I'd fallen off my bike.

00:23:09 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You just just open my eyes.

00:23:29 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Every time I've been on it up until that point and yeah, but you know, then I just thought, well, if I can do that with one foot.

00:23:37 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, clipped in. Maybe I could aim to have two feet clipped in the next time. So yeah.

    00:23:40

    Yeah.

00:23:41 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, that's that's so, so the like such a good mindset to have, it's it, it was, it was kind of like so broadly similar I had when I did before I did my first marathon again in like preparation for the Iron Man was I started doing like you know 5 and 10K races and it was almost it was almost kind of like incremental in that.

00:24:01 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

I was like, oh, I can do a 5K race. Ohh, I I should probably aim for a 10K race. That's just, that's just double, you know? But it's it was like literally these tiny little steps, you know, was what kind.

    00:24:06

    Yeah.

00:24:11 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Just started to open my eyes because I didn't really come from a, you know, a physical background. You know, my mom and my dad aren't really into their they're running or they're cycling or anything. And it's just, yeah, something strange, which are kind of like.

00:24:19 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    No.

00:24:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, I think it's it's it's, it's the set of setting of goals really, isn't it? It's as as you say, but I I just remember when my very first half my I am half marathon think.

00:24:24 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    5000 cents.

00:24:34 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Think why on Earth would anyone ever want to do a full one? I just couldn't understand it in the slightest. It was a it was a 2 loop marathon half marathon in the marathon and all I could think is thank goodness I'm going off to the left and not having to go on that loop again. So. So yeah. And then, you know, I think then.

    00:24:45

    Yes.

00:24:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

He's crossing that finish line and thinking, well, maybe maybe a few a few days later, it you seem to forget all the pain and everything that you've gone through.

00:25:03 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, it's, it's, it's funny because I think somebody, somebody said that.

00:25:09 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

When when of the Iron Man I was like, Oh my God, that's over. That's that's like 14 or 15 hours worth of of just like, you know, emotions. You go up and down and you kind of get bored and then you get frustration. Then you get fear that you're going to not make the cut off in the swim and it's it's it's like it's a rollercoaster mentally as much as it is.

00:25:18 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:25:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Exactly.

00:25:28 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, physically and mentally.

00:25:28 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Actually the Sophie.

00:25:29 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Definitely. Absolutely, yeah.

00:25:29 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Isn't it? And then and then obviously you know somebody says I would. You know, you got an Iron Man. You're like you want to do another one soon. And I was like, yeah, whatever. Thanks. And then. And it was literally like, you know, like a couple of weeks later, it was like, you know, I'm not sure if my memory had just switched it up as to the whole experience. And then I was like, oh, I wonder, wonder if there's like.

    00:25:38

    Hey.

00:25:49 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Demands in in Europe and other countries, you know, before I knew it, I was like, yeah, look at these other things.

00:25:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Exactly.

    00:26:00

    Very.

00:26:00 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Crazy. Oh, my God. OK, so going into, I mean, I'm. I'm just going to look at, you know, your your, your CV of.

00:26:10 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Extraordinary achievements. Obviously, you've gone through things like the different environments and and things you've been in. Do you think are you, are you now wanting to follow 11 type of sport or environment for example or or or do you kind of continue to do you see yourself kind of going?

    00:26:25

    No.

00:26:30 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Staying in all the environments and.

00:26:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, seeing seeing them in all of them really. You know, I think they they all give really different, you know, opportunities and experiences this year a managed I did a a marathon in the Yukon and then popped over the next day to do.

00:26:44 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Oh wow.

00:26:47 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

To do one in Alaska and you know that that environment, again, I did one in Siberia this year as well. So yeah, you know just different different you know that's that's still running but next year I'm hoping to go back and do the Yukon. So it's the IT.

    00:26:54

    What?

00:27:03 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Was.

00:27:04 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

The Yukon is supposed to be one of the hardest endurance.

00:27:08 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Event, But I'm looking at doing it on a bike, so I'm gonna do it on a fat bike next year, so it would be a cost. The same terrain with the same challenges, but just on a different mode of mode of.

    00:27:11

    OK.

00:27:19 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So yeah, you know, I think everything opens your eyes to to different things. You know, some of my some of the the hotter temperatures. So I one of my marathons was in Uganda, but I actually went out and did a a week's volunteering before.

00:27:34 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And putting on a school sports day for the for the children and going into the hospital and going into the local schools and then it sort of cumulated in in the marathon on the last day. So you you met and, you know, running along, you'd have 7 miles with kids running along with flip flops on and, you know, no, you know, just little dresses and things like that.

00:27:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So really different experiences, all with all the different things. So now I just you know, I'll keep going with all different different things and and it's trying to you know say to other people as well that you don't have to be just one you know discipline. I I struggle with the term athlete that's probably on my on my web page. You won't actually find the word athlete.

00:28:10 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:28:13 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Because I I'm never gonna be the fastest or the fittest person. But you know, I hope to go out and sort of make other people smile or make myself smile and raise just money and awareness for for charities. Really. So my my aim is slightly different in that I'm not always. In fact, I'm very rarely going for a time. There's there's three marathons.

00:28:34 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I could tell you the time for and the others. I'd just say that I have the time of my.

00:28:37 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Life.

00:28:38 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And and that's, you know that that's what.

00:28:38 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yes.

00:28:40 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I aim for with them or.

00:28:42 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, this this is something we spoke about a few weeks ago, wasn't it? How?

00:28:47 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Almost sometimes it almost feels like, you know, if you're not the fastest or the furthest, or the what's in the other world records term fastest, farthest and first. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. You know, like people say, well, you know, why do you want to go and do it? And I think this is something we're in agreement of.

00:28:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Highest, longest.

00:29:05 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Now, sometimes it's it's just doing it is.

00:29:09 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, is a learning experience and it gives you, you know, kind of enriching your life and kind of makes you appreciate times like like, now we're going for this isolation. You know, you can think of you can pull up a load of examples of, uh, well, at least at least I'm not on top of, you know, the mount this mountain or in the Sahara right now or in doing this or doing that it kind of.

00:29:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, it it makes you very grateful for.

00:29:31 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    What you what you have?

00:29:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Got and not not you haven't something sometimes because I think you, you, you you know going to different countries meeting different people you have your eyes open to to how different the world can be rather than just staying contained in in one very small pocket really of the world so yeah yeah that's what I love about it.

00:29:33 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, yeah.

00:29:52 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Definitely. And it's yeah.

00:29:54 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, I I just, I just think like kind of like post lockdown world now is I think probably a lot of people will be will be looking for you know UK based adventures and and I'm not too sure how international travel's going to to work out as as you know as I think anyone's really that that sure about.

00:30:06 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:30:14 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:30:14 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Got kind of things in the UK which you like right now. Now's my time to go and.

00:30:18 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Swim Lake Windermere, or?

00:30:20 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Do the Pennine way or.

00:30:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Well, I did try.

00:30:21 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

That I I've done a I have. I've been very lucky in the UK as well in that I have done the Windermere one way swim, but I only I only managed I say I only I only managed to do. I only managed to do 6 miles and it's it's 10 miles but I'd only been in the water three times that year and so.

00:30:40 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I it was one of the again, it was another learning really learn, you know, really big learning experience in that I thought, Yep, I cause I must admit I'm not the best at training on any of these. I just kind of think I could just do it. And yeah, I've been in been in the water three times.

00:30:50 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, same here.

00:30:56 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Times and thought. Yeah, I can go and go and do 10 miles after about 6 miles. It's just over the halfway point. My shoulder was really, really sore and I've got another 10K swim in a in a few weeks time and then I've got another Iron Man a couple of weeks after that and I really.

00:31:16 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

It was really hard, but I had to listen to my own advice and what I would be saying to a patient if they found themselves in the same situation.

00:31:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So tough as it was, I could have carried on and I could have finished, but I wouldn't have been able to do that next 10K and I wouldn't have been able to do the Iron Man. So I I you know, I I did did stop, but I think it's probably one of the the biggest lessons and again you know I think it helps other people when they they don't always achieve the first time. You know I don't feel a failure.

00:31:45 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

It was. It was the furthest I'd ever swam in my in my life in one go. So I felt like I, you know, I had still achieved. I hadn't done the preparation, and that was completely my my own fault.

    00:31:56

    Yeah.

00:31:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So you know, I will look to go back and if that's on this year, I hope hope to do that. And then I was lucky enough to cycle. I've done Land's End Jenna Groats and Joanna Groats, Land's End. And I've also done the North Coast 500 around Scotland. The cycle around there which was, yeah, incredible really, you know, incredible scenery.

00:32:12 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Oh wow.

00:32:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And and I was fortunate enough. I've done the three peaks challenge in in 24 hours as well so so as well as going abroad, I've managed to still keep, you know, keeping the UK and do things, but there's always more to do always you know other other things to do.

    00:32:29

    Yeah.

00:32:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    So.

00:32:33 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

My God, I I totally empathise with them. With your earlier comments about not feeling a failure. I've I've been to the matter of them three times over the last three years, and obviously the last time it it gave me a real it really bit back. Yeah, it really bit me back in the last on the last.

00:32:46 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Well, you've had a.

00:32:47 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Different experience, yes, different experience every time.

00:32:53 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

But I'm yeah, it's like it's still it's still kind of everything past the past 4000 metres on, no matter when it's still.

00:32:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I was definitely trying to tell.

00:32:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    You something then, wasn't it?

00:33:03 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

I was the unclimbed territory for me and I'm like that every every time. It does make me think you know the first time I went really, really underprepared. You know? I was. I was like, I felt very much like, you know, the the mountain was owning me because I was like I didn't realise this was it. It was it. And the next year is a bit better prepared. But I mean, I was kind of too much weight.

    00:33:05

    Yeah.

00:33:12 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:33:24 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

I said too much care and I had that.

00:33:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Is that in your kit or on your body?

00:33:28 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, exactly. I think both actually. Yeah, I was like, I was like, I took the the the typically kind of you know military approach of I was just like oh like if I need something I'll pack two of them and you know, and then they'll pack a, you know, pack a third of them as well. You know, I went too heavy and and then, you know, we got a bit further up and and then I was like.

00:33:38 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:33:46 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

My God, it's like an assault course that starts at 3000 metres. You know where you you've got like, 10% less oxygen off the top of my head.

00:33:51 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Wow.

00:33:55 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

So yeah, so so the the third year last year I was like, well, I need to go super like this year and you know need to be really prepared for this. I need to do loads of you know kind of strength work and you know kind of like oxygen deprivation work and so you know the the the simple was was really good for that. And yeah then obviously.

00:34:06 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:34:15 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, had a bit of a, you know, a a silly accident and then, you know, put myself in hospital for for, you know, for a good few months. But it's, you know, it's still it's still there and it's, you know, hopefully go for another attempt at it sometime in the future, but I'm I still feel, you know all.

00:34:29 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:34:32 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    The.

00:34:32 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

More, you know, rich and for.

00:34:35 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Rich, richer for for the experience. You know it, it just it does feel it. It's kind of.

00:34:40 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Great to have an adversary like it, you know.

00:34:43 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I'm not sure the last attempt really. I think we could go without that, Sir. And everything you've put everyone else through with that, Sir. You know, just just for for future reference.

00:34:47 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:34:54 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

But yeah, there's been some big life lessons learned out of that. I've I've been through sellers. But like, like even your help with them, you know, obviously signposting me towards now the physio and you know it it's really I think.

00:34:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:35:05 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:35:08 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know your your career, your, your, you're outside of the military now, do you do you say you you've you've you're you're a veteran, you've left the military presumably you'll you'll be setting up a a physiotherapy consultancy to help other athletes or other.

    00:35:17

    Yeah.

00:35:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

No, not not, not. Not at all. Not not. No, not not, not at all. I think you know, I lost. Unfortunately, I lost too much confidence.

00:35:26 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Then.

00:35:34 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

With that, and yeah, you know, it's sort of, you know, although it was what I aspired to do for so many years, and I did do it for 20 years. Yeah, I just think unfortunately with the with the depression, with the anxiety, it just it just got got worse. So yeah, you know, kind of think, right, what?

    00:35:49

    Yeah, yeah.

00:35:53 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    What other avenues are?

00:35:54 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    There to and.

00:35:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, don't get me wrong, I'll still use the the skills that I've learned, but I'm just looking at channelling them in a in a different way, really. And. And, you know, quite an exciting way of what I want to do. I sort of want to go into to schools.

00:36:01 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:36:07 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And you know, I've got over 40 different fruit costumes now, which. Yeah, you know, a wardrobe of a fruit salad and, you know, talk to talk to young people about healthy eating, about mental health and about physical activity and how the three all work in combination with each other. So obviously my background as a physio for the physical activity.

00:36:28 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Alongside my my own sort of.

00:36:31 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Achievements and accomplishments with those the healthy eating because of the fruit and I'm looking.

00:36:36 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Venture into the vegetable market as well and and also my own experience of of poor mental health and you know, actually if talking about it and you know, talking about fear and talking to young people about, you know, anxiety and how, you know it it we need it but also how we can channel it in the right ways.

00:36:38 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

    00:36:42

    Yeah.

00:36:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And just, you know, have it so that they're not afraid to talk. So. So yeah, that's what I'm sort of hoping to, you know, hoping to do. When, when lockdown sort of eases and.

    00:37:04

    Yeah.

00:37:08 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

We can go go into into schools, you know, and just and just tell some of the stories and tell some of the, you know, the I mean each one of these, as you say, you know, it gives the gives a story and whether that be whether it be a good experience or a bad experience it it gives you know it gives some kind of story and context to it. So yeah sharing that and then hopefully inspiring others to.

00:37:29 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

To take on their own mountains or oceans or deserts, whatever that might be, or or even, and even if they don't, you know, just taking the lessons from saying, actually, it might not be something physical that you want to do. It might be.

00:37:41 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know a different project that you want to use, but if you can use to use the mindsets that you've developed through those projects and see that they're transferable, then you know all well and good that way as well, because not everybody's, you know, active and it doesn't, you know, it doesn't float everybody's boat. So it's what what fits the individual really.

00:38:00 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, you know, I don't think there's any more of a crucial time than than right now to to start getting your messages out there about.

00:38:08 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know all those things you mentioned from healthy eating to mental health to, you know, to advocate advocacy for, for good life balance shining a light on on all those areas is right now. I think the you know the world needs it. The world needs you know.

00:38:25 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Your your stories and your messages to come out and.

00:38:29 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

During these, you know particularly difficult times because I generally are particularly difficult.

00:38:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, I.

00:38:33 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Think.

00:38:35 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I think through I've used lockdown to take the time to sort of write a a small sort of children's book which I've called a a fruitful life. And yeah, I I think visually for for young people to see, you know, they don't, they don't always understand.

00:38:50 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

How far a marathon is? I don't think many adults are, you know, always understand.

00:38:53 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And and and and it doesn't have to be about the distance, but it's more, you know the the colour and the the flavour I guess of of the experiences of that you can do. I've got lots of different fruit puns.

00:39:05 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    In there the the.

00:39:05 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

But I was just thinking how how good are they? Just like they they just fit the situation is so wrong.

    00:39:11

    But.

00:39:11 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

The twist and how you have to squeeze the day.

00:39:15 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:39:18 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And I've now got my own sort of little motto of hashtag of of, you know, I'm not Nike of just do it. Mine is more juiced. Do it.

00:39:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know a mindset of, you know, just say yes and.

00:39:29 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Just do it.

00:39:32 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So but yeah, it, you know, I think it's the visual part for young people that, you know, you know, even in more recent times, I've sort of taken my costumes to a few friends and, you know, taking the Guinness Book of Records book and shown them the pictures in there. And they're like.

00:39:32 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Well.

00:39:46 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Wow, you know, and I'd say, you know, again, I'm not anything different. I'm nothing special. I'm just a an ordinary person. That's just had a bit of a slightly different off the wall idea really.

00:39:57 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, I think it's in. You know, I can't believe I've been. I've been running to tales adventure for what, two years now? And. And you know, I've I've been just got got round two, you know, talking to you on the podcast and getting on the stage. I feel like I'm. I'm just like, well, I just I should have been trying harder like last couple years.

    00:40:16

    Ohh no no.

00:40:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    I I literally I I don't really do social media. It's only again, it's only through lockdown that I've even got a website. I haven't.

00:40:26 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, I've just, I haven't really. You know, it's quite. It's quite funny when people call you a role model because that's something that I've really struggled to almost, you know, for a while to come to terms with realising that maybe maybe I am. And I think often that's partly due to my to my illness and that I often think that I I'm not good enough and and I think that if I've achieved it, will it.

00:40:46 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You can't be that difficult cause I've managed to achieve it cause I just know I'm an ordinary person. Yeah, but but from that, you know, I've sort of recognised.

00:40:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

That I've been very privileged. Now you know, I I I I do say as well there's been a lot of hard work, commitment, sacrifices. But I feel I've been incredibly privileged and you know I I did hear something that really resonated me last year. Was that with privilege comes responsibility and so. So that's something now that I do see a sense of purpose in being able to sort of inspire others to.

00:41:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

To achieve, however big or small their goals might be.

00:41:22 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And and yeah, was very, very honoured earlier this year in January to be appointed the first and only female national ambassador for the for the Army cadets which you know is a way of taking that honour and privilege on and and taking it really seriously for, for young people to aspire to. Yeah, and help them with their journeys.

00:41:32 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:41:41 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, definitely. I mean the.

00:41:44 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

The I really became aware of of what they call the Imposter syndrome about sort of two years ago and I I I I came from a like a single parent household where my mum raised my brother and I and you know, we were. We were on a low income, you know, free school meals for for, you know, all the way through school and and you know.

00:41:49 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:42:03 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:42:04 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And I was like it it it would have been incredible to have role models like yourself when, you know, when when I was growing up, you know, where where there are people who can say actually, you know, that a marathon is.

00:42:17 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

It's not this super long distance. It's it's 410 kilometre runs with a, you know, a little cool down at the.

00:42:23 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    End of it.

00:42:24 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, for example, it's the, it's for the people, for people just to to actually, you know, kind of make these things that seem out of touch all the more achievable and and yeah, I I know you'll be uncomfortable with with being able to role model.

00:42:24 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:42:37 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    But.

00:42:39 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, I can't wait to see where where all your CV achievements will will lead you into because it's it generally is incredible and I I I promise I won't make you feel too uncomfortable with. You know we're we're saying all that stuff but it's yeah you.

00:42:55 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Know.

00:42:56 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

It generally is incredible to go from.

00:42:59 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know people, people find they are oriented or I'm I'm very they've orientated towards like colder environments because I I seem to get really hot in deserts and just you know general summer times so like the NDS of me just felt like an utter griz for seven days.

    00:43:07

    Yeah.

00:43:17 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Ohh yeah, I near I nearly found myself on his on a drip and I I yeah. Yeah. So I I struggled with that and then I have actually had I've got non freezing cold injuries in my hand and feet from from the climbing and thought I should never really you know I I really have to manage myself you know quite.

00:43:21 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Will.

00:43:37 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Quite closely in those cold environments. Yeah, but I just thought I'm not. I'm not gonna let let it beat me. You know, kit and preparation is is what I've got to do. But I I you know, I use all of particularly the the fancy dress because I know a lot of people aren't, aren't comfortable with and a lot of guys in the military kind of, you know, sort of poo poo a little bit cause it's a bit, you know, a bit silly, a bit childish, a bit fun.

00:43:58 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    It's got a. It's got a wider.

00:43:58 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

About half and half than the NDS they were sorry, sorry. I don't mean I don't mean to interrupt you. I bet there is. I I don't know who have done the mouth and disables or 7 ironmans or 50 marathons like that.

    00:44:00

    Well, there's no.

    00:44:03

    No.

    00:44:07

    Why?

00:44:10 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, it you know.

00:44:12 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, it it. It is quite. You know, it is quite funny how they, you know, seem to as you say they haven't actually done themselves to know know what it's.

00:44:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Like but.

00:44:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

But it's more just a a dressing, you know, it's my way of sort of raising awareness of, of mental health in in quite a unique way and that's, you know, people can say, well, how does dressing as a piece of fruit equate to mental? What? What's the, you know, what's the relation?

00:44:36 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

And and basically I stand out. So if I go to a A, you know, a marathon, I I'm often. I mean I remember going to America to the US Marine Corps marathon. I didn't see another person the whole time in fancy dress. And so people often ask me why. And they say why are you dressed as that? And I literally just have a conversation that says.

00:44:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I'm doing it because I want to raise awareness and mental health that opens up a conversation and somebody says, ah, I've struggled or I know someone who struggled and and it's just a it's a non threatening way of of talking about it. You know, they don't have to have to say anything because they can go back to the fruit. You know they could.

00:45:15 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah.

00:45:16 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, go back to the costume or something, but it's surprising how people do open up when it's not, you know. And so it it's really surprising how, yeah, how fruit has changed my life. And, you know, my my awareness of of, of wearing fancy dress and that. But I think probably my my strangest fancy dress outfit has got.

00:45:36 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Be a huge inflatable penis which was around the Olympic Park and and there was there was 40 huge inflatable penises running around the Olympic Park to raise awareness for for male cancer and for for penile and and testicular cancer. So it was hilarious.

00:45:56 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    It's called the Willy.

00:45:57 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Waddle and and just brilliant. So you know I'm not. I I'm not too shy to to promote if it's, you know if it's gonna and particularly being in the army there's so many guys that yeah. You know they they need to you know need to be aware of these these things.

00:46:14 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

So. So yeah, it's just a fun way of highlighting really sensitive issues often.

00:46:19 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah. No, it's it's, it's like if any said that I I I did the the London Marathon what four years ago and umm from Canary Wharf until the very end I I was uh trying to chase and catch up to a a guy that was dressed as a a **** **** 13 miles you know.

    00:46:35

    Right. Yeah, yeah.

00:46:38 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    You don't want to.

00:46:40 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Had the time to literally say, oh, well, this this guy's running to highlight testicular cancer, you know, I'm like, you know, it's it's fantastic because as people, you know, Clay, who's quite a quite a social part of the London.

    00:46:44

    Yeah.

00:46:51 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Marathon, isn't it?

00:46:51 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, absolutely, yeah.

00:46:52 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

And there's people there who are, like, running. You know, there's people there drinking in and obviously running to take photos with the the guy dressed as the, you know, as the ball.

    00:46:59

    Yeah.

    00:47:00

    Yeah.

00:47:00 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know, I was like, actually this guy got action. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah.

00:47:01 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

But you know, he's the one that you remember.

00:47:04 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, he's the one you remember. And you're you're talking about now. So it, you know, it doesn't. It doesn't just keep it to that day. Yeah, it, you know, it's sort of years after that, you're still talking about it. So yeah, it it. Yeah, it it. It is fun to be able to do it that way.

00:47:09 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Had the effect, yeah.

00:47:14 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yes.

00:47:19 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Yeah, exactly. Well, I I guess probably it like it leads me on to my my kind of final question. Has there been anyone kind of instrumental in your journey that you'd you'd want to to sort of say thank you to or highlight or applaud?

00:47:36 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

I think you know, I've thought about this many a time and and there's probably no one person, but I think my job as a as a physiotherapist, and particularly within, you know, in the military and seeing what I did in in Afghanistan and seeing some really, really severely injured, you know, guys and girls and.

00:47:55 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

They they have really become a huge inspiration for me in that what they've gone on to.

00:48:00 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Achieve and what? What they've gone through. But then have, you know, succeeded with with after. So there's a whole group of of people that you know by, by being sort of, you know, have been involved with them, has has spurred me, has spurred me on. So, yeah, I'd say I'd say patience.

00:48:20 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, a lot of, you know, the mindset that they have, the tenacity and the commitment.

00:48:27 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, really through, you know adversity, you know, I know that I've had my my own struggles. But yeah, I, you know, I I think sometimes the the your darkest and deep you know darkest hours when you look back I I specifically remember during the marathon Saab on the on the long day thinking this isn't as bad.

    00:48:45

    Yes.

00:48:47 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

As when I was really, really poorly so I use it as a reference point to to kind of go, it really isn't that bad. So I can keep going through this and it'll be over soon. So yeah, so that, that's where I'd say that it comes from.

00:49:00 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Really.

00:49:01 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

So yeah, that's it's it's such a an incredibly wise way to look at it, it's.

00:49:07 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know a series of reference points, and I think when you when you have those reference points in your life, that's when you can be swayed by the situation or you can, you know, feel.

00:49:21 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

That you know that things are are more challenging than than, I guess without those reference points, yeah.

00:49:28 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah, you know, absolutely. And then.

00:49:31 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

You know, and and certainly certainly for yourself where where you are at the moment. I'm sure you use your, you know sometimes you can think ohh you know I've not achieved anything this week but it it's when you look back and go actually I couldn't even do this you know three weeks ago and now I'm I'm leaps and bounds from from what I want you know so I I don't advocate looking back.

00:49:51 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Often because it you know it can cause, you know, depression and it can, it can get you stuck. But I think as a reference point to to look almost in your rear view might mirror to see how far forward you can go it. You know it's a great way to spur.

00:50:05 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    You on definitely, yeah.

00:50:08 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

It's it's funny to hear that because the this morning I met with a friend in a a park where a social distancing fitness session, you know, where we literally just threw like logs around, you know, in a safe corner of the park. And you know, if I think back six months ago, I was, I was on the safe, I couldn't even walk to the.

00:50:19 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:50:26 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Oh.

00:50:28 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

The bathroom, you know, to to use the bathroom has had to weed into like a, you know, into a little a little pot. So, you know, it's it's kind of, yeah, like you say from time to time it is good.

00:50:29 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:50:35 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah, yeah.

00:50:39 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    To say actually.

00:50:39 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

You know what? It's definitely come a bit further than than.

00:50:43 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, give yourself credit for.

00:50:45 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Yeah. And I, you know, I think we're all very good at being hard on ourselves. And yeah, we don't give ourselves enough credit. We wouldn't talk to ourselves. We wouldn't talk to our friends the way that we we talk to ourselves, so that that's a lesson to have to it. It's a hard lesson to learn, but then it needs work on but it it's certainly worth doing.

00:51:04 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Yeah, definitely.

00:51:06 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Definitely. Well, my God, I've realised we've already gone over massively overtime and I'm in in danger of. No, no, no. It's my fault. I I I I I knew this was going to happen that I would there I get too drawn into it and I would end up dominating dominating your afternoon so.

00:51:13 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Ohh happy sorry.

00:51:25 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

Oh no, not at all. No problem.

00:51:25 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    Ohh I'll I'll end. I'll, I'll. I'll save the the.

00:51:31 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

    OK. Yeah.

00:51:42 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Think they'll be absolutely enthralled by it? I know I I am, and my God, I'm you know, it gives me. It gives me like you've you've got such an incredible. I don't I don't even sure have CV is the right word because it's like you know it's like so much.

00:51:47 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Ah, that's very kind.

00:52:01 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio

Like diversity in in the environments that you've, you've really gone through it's, it's that's inspiring itself, you know, rather than if you're if you're a Mountaineer, for example, and you're like, you know, you're inspired by the Mountaineers. But I think this, you know just.

00:52:11 Sally Orange MBE, multiple world record holder, Marathon des Sables finisher and former Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) officer

    Yeah.

00:52:17 Chris Shirley, Website Developer, Digital Marketing Specialist and Brand Designer at Haus of Hiatus, website and brand design studio
